DeepSeek Struggles to Train AI on Huawei Chips
Chinese company DeepSeek has encountered significant difficulties in launching its new AI model after attempts to train it on Huawei chips failed. This setback highlights China's ongoing struggle to fully replace American technology in the field of artificial intelligence.
The Chinese government had initially advised DeepSeek to use Huawei Ascend processors instead of Nvidia chips. However, as reported by the Financial Times, even with the support of Huawei's engineers, training the R2 model on these chips proved to be unsuccessful.
As a result, DeepSeek was forced to switch back to Nvidia chips for the training phase, with Huawei processors now only being used for generating responses. Experts attribute this to Chinese chips currently lagging behind their American counterparts in key areas such as operational stability, data transfer speeds, and software quality.
